NFL Rule Proposal Set to Boost Kickoff Returns Following Jets’ 99-Yard Dash

Kene Nwangwu sprinted past the opposing team on a 99-yard touchdown run. That highlight set an energetic tone early in the game. NFL officials expect more kickoff returns if owners accept a proposal that moves the touchback mark to the 35-yard line. Competition committee leader Rich McKay explained the change could boost return attempts, with a vote scheduled for next week’s annual meeting in Palm Beach, Florida. At least 24 votes are required for approval.

Statistics show touchback occurrences climbed from 21.8% in 2023 to 32.8% last season after modifying the kickoff system. The league’s special teams staff and management noted touchbacks at the 30-yard line while recording an average return of 27.6 yards. The revised configuration, which widens the gap between the touchback point and typical return distance, is likely to motivate teams to try returns rather than take touchbacks. The rule change is part of a set of proposals aimed at fostering more competitive returns and exciting plays.
