German club Bayern Munich has asked for a detailed explanation from the officials managing Canada’s team after defender Alphonso Davies suffered a ligament tear. Davies, aged 24, was forced off early during Canada’s 2-1 win over the United States in the Concacaf Nations League third-place playoff. The setback occurred only 12 minutes into the match and now casts doubt over his participation in Bayern’s crucial season finale.
Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund expressed his disappointment during a press conference, stating that the incident is very upsetting and questioning how such damage could occur. He pointed out that Davies had mentioned feeling tired after Canada’s previous match but still played to support his team as captain, despite his condition being marginal. Soon after his removal from the game, Davies was scheduled on a long 12-hour flight, which led the club to believe the injury was minor. They were startled to learn he had torn his right knee’s ligament.
Friend added that the management expects a thorough review of the procedures followed, stating his intention to investigate what went wrong, since the club is directly involved with the well-being of its players. Canadian officials have not yet responded to these pressing concerns.
