Wizards of the Coast, the company behind the popular game Dungeons & Dragons, is reducing its involvement in video game production and has canceled several projects.
The decision signals a flip in the company’s perspective and will affect studios such as Otherside Entertainment and Hidden Path Entertainment.
A company spokesperson informed Bloomberg that it remains “committed to using digital games.”
They added, “[we] made some changes to our long-term portfolio to focus on games which are strategically aligned with developing our existing brands and those which show promise in expanding or engaging our audience in new ways.”
The cancellations will lead to fewer than 15 Wizards of the Coast staff losing their jobs.
Nevertheless, the cancelations minimize an attempted resurgence in the D&D video game space. Larian Studios continues to receive praise for Baldur’s Gate 3 and is expected not to be affected by Wizards of the Coast’s decision to reduce its involvement in smaller-scale video games.
